On March 20th, 2021, students of Honors College welcomed Mr. Bill Wright, a lecturer of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, to give an online report of industrial design and contemporary art. Ms. Yuan Yun (the deputy dean of HC) and Ms. Nan Yun (the teaching secretary of HC) attended Qizhen Salon as well. Over 200 students participated in this salon.
At the beginning of the report, Mr. Wright introduced the definition of Contemporary Fine Art. He also used a timeline, which classifies various arts from 1880 to modern arts (1960) and contemporary art (1960 onwards). He provided some examples about contemporary fine art, assisting students in understanding contemporary art. He also associated the art with industrial design, which is the key content in this lecture. Various examples were illustrated, and impressed students a lot. Besides, Mr. Wright connected contemporary fine art with daily life, bridging the gap between contemporary fine art and students.
After Mr. Bill’s presentation, students posed questions actively, including the balance of beauty of the art and the efficiency of the industry and how to judge an art good or not. designs. Wright responded to the latter questions with his thoughts that the time and the market would be the best judgers for the value of arts.
The lecture was very well received by students. It not only enriched the students' study life, but also made students understand the close relationship between contemporary fine art and industrial design further.
